Loxahatchee is a community located just north of Wellington, and northwest of Royal Palm Beach in Palm Beach County, Florida. The area is nearly 17 miles west of West Palm Beach. The area takes its name from the Loxahatchee River – interestingly ‘Loxahatchee’ is a Seminole Indian word which means ‘River of Turtles’.
In 2006 part of Loxahatchee became incorporated as Loxahatchee Groves, to protect the rural character of this neighborhood as the town continued to grow and develop. However, this area might be the most rural community that remains close to West Palm Beach. In terms of Real Estate there are relatively loose land restrictions, and large lot sizes that range from 1-20 acres. You are likely to encounter lots of horses and other native or more exotic animals roaming throughout the area. It is similar to the other rural and equestrian community of The Acreage.
One of the biggest attractions in the area is Lion Country Safari – Florida’s only drive-through safari park with amusement park that sits on over 600 acres in the heart of Loxahatchee. The park has over 1000 animals and offers many fun experiences such as animal feeding, displays, and encounters. There are also 5 rides, a ‘water spray-ground’, restaurants, and shops.
Despite its rural nature, you can drive from Loxahatchee to Palm Beach Gardens in less than 20-minutes, and West Palm Beach in under 30.
